Harvey Wrestling Takes 2nd at Ian Jones Memorial Tournament

The Harvey High School wrestling team finished second overall at the Ian Jones Memorial Tournament, a day marked by strong competition, hard lessons, and meaningful moments of remembrance.

Harvey opened the tournament with a dominant performance against Euclid, earning a convincing 60–11 victory. The Red Raiders followed that with a gritty 47–32 win over Eastlake North, a dual that produced one of the most memorable moments of the day.

One of the highlights of the tournament came during the Eastlake North match when Nataly Nila stepped in at 106 pounds for the boys lineup. With the dual hanging in the balance, Nila delivered in a pressure-packed situation, securing a pin with a well-executed cradle to lock up both the bout and the team victory. The moment was nothing short of heroic and perfectly captured the toughness, versatility, and team-first mentality that defines the Harvey program.

Momentum continued as Harvey battled past a tough, scrappy Garrett Morgan squad, securing a narrow 44–36 win in one of the most competitive duals of the tournament. The match came down to effort in key swing bouts, with Harvey doing just enough to pull away.

The day’s toughest challenge came against an elite Northmont team that traveled from Dayton. Northmont delivered a decisive 78–0 victory, providing a clear and humbling look at what a top-tier, championship-level program looks like. The experience served as a powerful wake-up call and a reminder of the standard required to compete at the highest level.

Harvey responded the right way, closing the tournament with a strong 58–16 win over Uniontown Lake, showing composure, pride, and the ability to reset after adversity.

Harvey's dual meet record now stands at 15-2.

Remembering Ian Jones

Northmont’s presence carried special meaning. Northmont made the trip north specifically to help honor and remember Ian Jones. One of their coaches, Daniel Hall, is a former Harvey wrestler under Coach Patty. Hall joined current Heritage Wrestling head coach Juan Arias, also a former Harvey wrestler, in sharing memories of their friend and teammate Ian Jones — a reminder of the lasting bonds formed through wrestling and the impact Ian continues to have on those who knew him.

Standout Individual Performances

Several Harvey wrestlers finished the day 3–2 or better, providing consistent contributions throughout the lineup:

Girls Wrestling Highlights

Harvey’s girls also competed and continued strong seasons. Giselle Moreno improved her record to 15–1, continuing to set the standard. Joanna Mendez and Joanna Lopez each picked up two wins on the day. Sophomore Sophia Turner added another highlight, executing a clean fireman’s carry to pin her Euclid opponent and showing clear progress as the season continues.

The Ian Jones Memorial Tournament once again lived up to its purpose — honoring a great teammate, reconnecting former wrestlers, and providing a measuring stick for growth. Harvey leaves the event tested, humbled, and more determined than ever to keep pushing forward.
